“Pretty Bird” EP

December 2013, I lost my best friend in a tragic and unexpected car accident. Her name was Jean Amidon and she was the best part of my Montana experience thus far. We did everything together: skied, hiked, paddle boarded, ate giant chocolate chip cookies, explored every trail on sunny days, snow, ice and sometimes on horseback. We laughed, we cried, we finished each other’s sentences.Jean
I could write a book about how amazing Jean was, but the singer in me found the best way to capture my love and my grief was to make a time-capsule recording dedicated to Jean and to her belief in me as a singer.

I wrote “I’ll See You Next Time” about my final words to Jean.  I recorded “Revelation Song” because for a month after she died, this was the only song I could listen to, clinging onto it’s softness in the wee small hours of the morning.  And finally, “Pretty Bird” was a song suggested by my producer Erica von Kleist. Though we rarely spoke of it, Erica seemed to understand the way this song would express my grief and help me let go of it as well.  “Pretty Bird” was written by Hazel Dickens, a West Virginia coal-miner’s daughter. Though I’m half Colombian, I was born in West Virginia and my grandfather worked in the coal mines. It’s as if this song was already imbedded in my DNA.

So many other interesting things and blessing occurred surrounding this record, I could certainly write a book. One story is that cellist Jesse Ahmann, who I recorded “Pretty Bird” with, had also lost someone dear to him, his sister (http://www.christinaahmann.com). I think you can hear the beauty and the heaviness of his grief in his cello playing. I didn’t know it at the time, but I think these emotions helped to make the track magical.

I hope this record brings you love and healing.  God willing, there’s more music to come…

Two amazing women helped me create this EP record.  Jean always believed in me and encouraged me to follow my musical path as a recording artist.  Erica, my musical mentor from start to finish, taught me how to reharmonize songs I love for jazz music and also helped arrange “I’ll See You Next Time” a song I wrote for Jean.
